Tea Time at the Strand Yangon | Around the World in 30 Days
I love tea. I love cake. I love tea and cake. So, unsurprisingly, I love a proper tea time with tea, cake, and all the other treats. Slowing things down to enjoy tea and snacks is very relaxing for me. I’m able to notice the flavors. I’m free to appreciate the here and now. While in Myanmar on my round-the-world trip, I knew I needed one of these mindful moments. So, I stopped by The Strand Yangon to indulge in a little high tea.
The Strand Yangon

Marble, mahogany, and a bright wallpaper provide a feeling of colonial luxury
The Strand Yangon is one of Myanmar’s most famous hotels, looking onto the Yangon River since 1901. For nearly 25 years, the property was owned by the Sarkie brothers, luxury hoteliers with a portfolio including the Raffles in Singapore and Eastern and Oriental Hotel in Malaysia. The five-star hotel stands as a piece of colonial history in the evolving cityscape, with architecture and decor that remains true to the period. Now under the management of GCP Hospitality and a member of the Leading Hotels of the World, The Strand Yangon continues to welcome the rich and famous.
Burmese High Tea

The Strand Yangon offers two different high tea sets
Along with an à la carte menu, The Strand offers two high tea sets, the Classic High Tea and the Myanmar High Tea. As delicious as mango sorbets and raspberry tarts may be, I went with—and recommend trying—the Myanmar High Tea set. This set offers a gourmet introduction to Burmese flavors, elevating traditional dishes like laphet (tea leaf salad) and semolina cake. The food comes out all at once in stacking containers. At the top are the savory dishes, while the sweet treats are found at the bottom. Flavors are vibrant and varied throughout, and ‘unboxing’ each dish feels like discovering the culture bit by bit. Overall, incorporating the Burmese flavors brings a fun twist to the classic high tea.
